5.25 Floppy Disk Drives

Apple Disk ][ Drive / Compatibles (20 Pin)

Compatibility:][, ][+, //e,or IIgs (w/20 Pin Disk ][ Controller or compatible installed)

Uses: Can be used as first or second drive.

Storage: The Drive is compatible with ProDOS, DOS 3.3, Apple Pascal 1.2/1.3 & Apple CP/M It is a single sided, double density drive,It stores 143 K of information, or 560 Sectors of DOS 3.3, 280 ProDOS Blocks. This is a Apple GCR Device only and can not read any other formats even with additional software or hardware.

Technical Specifications: It uses a Shugart Mechanism, and the Analog card is an Apple card. It can be adapted to a DB-19 but still falls under all the same usage restrictions as any other DB-19 drive that is NOT the 'Platinum' drive, and unless the conversion cable is equipped with an additional DB-19 connector the drive can only be used as the last device on a system as nothing else can attach to it. There are also many Third Party drives based on this same or similar design, some are out right duplications and others are completely different such as the Rana Elite Series.

Common problems occurred using this device: Heads need cleaned Speed Adjustment gets slow/faster. Plugged into controller card backwards or improperly aligned pins when plugged in.

AppleDisk 5.25 / Compatibles (19 Pin)

DB-19 Connector version.

Drives that fall into this category are the Apple DuoDisk, Apple UniDisk 5.25", AppleDisk 5.25", any converted 20 Pin drives and many drives offered by other vendors with a DB 19 cable and daisy chain pass through port. The DuoDisk does not offer the pass through port because it is a 2 drive unit and since the 5.25" is always the last device on a drive chain, it is not needed.

Compatibility:][, ][+, //c, IIgs,, //e, Laser 128, Franklin Ace 500

(With either a DB-19 ('DuoDisk' / Apple 5.25" Controller) or a smartport (drive port) based computer such as the //c, IIgs, Laser 128, Franklin Ace 500.

Do NOT to plug these drives into any connection with the power to the computer ON! Bad Things do happen when you do this.

  • NOTE:20 pin drives that have been converted are only compatible with the ROM 01 IIgs. NOT the ROM 03,//c+^2or //e Emulation Card. See note(s) below.

NOTE:The Apple //c+,[1] the ROM 03 IIgs and//e Emulation card require the Apple Platinum "AppleDisk 5.25" Drive. Model #A9M0107.

Uses: Can be used as first or second drive^1.

Storage:The Drive is compatible with ProDOS, DOS 3.3, Apple Pascal 1.2/1.3 & Apple CP/M It is a single sided, double density drive,It stores 143 K of information, or 560 Sectors of DOS 3.3, 280 ProDOS Blocks. This is a Apple GCR Device only and can not read any other formats even with additional software or hardware.

Common problems occurred using this device: Heads need cleaned Speed Adjustment gets slow/faster. Plugged into the computer with the power on. If this is done on a //c or IIgs you will kill the 341-0041 chip. (Known as the IWM or Incredible Woz Machine)

1) This drive does NOT have a "daisy-chain" port on the back of the drive. This means this drive must be the last drive on a chain or the only 5.25" drive. It can not be the first drive in a set of 2.

2) It seems that this condition sometimes may not apply to the //c+, depending on the date of manufacture of the computer, this should be approached on a case by case basis. If the drive works with AppleWorks 2.0 & ProDOS 8 1.7 & up, there should be no problems.
